A blanket for my baby

Back in November, I mentioned an afghan I was crocheting from a baby blanket pattern. After a year of working on it on and off, I finally finished it!  I wanted to complete it in time for my "baby" to take it along to his new apartment.  He came home yesterday to steal a rug for his living room.  I was all "Your blanket's done!" and he was all "It looks great. Nice stripes.  I'm not taking it right now."  Did you hear the pop that was my balloon being burst? Or maybe it was just the hiss of a slow leak of the air being let out. Regardless of the letdown of not hearing, "I've been hoping you'd get it done! I can't wait to take it with me!" I am happy to have completed the afghan even if it is still here instead of warming up the college apartment.

It is quite a large afghan as you can see.  The "baby" is 6'3" and wanted the blanket to be big enough to stretch from toes to chin.  Not sure if it's quite that long, but it's a big one.  And heavy.  It weighs about six pounds.  It's nice to finish a big project, but the husband is a little envious of the blanket, so who knows?  Maybe I'll have to start another one and, if I'm industrious, get it finished before we are shipped off to the old folks home.

  1. WOW - this is totally fantastic!! - So handsome - you did a wonderful job! I'm sure that your son didn't want to take it to college right now because you would have been swamped with orders from all of his friends - your son was just thinking of you (trying to put a positive spin on his reaction).

  2. That's amazing! It looks incredible. However, I'm a little sad at your son's reaction. I was hoping reactions to hand made items would get better with age. This does not give me hope for my kids.

  3. Agree that is amazing, keep it for yourself and make him wait for another, kids can be so unfeeling, lets hope his new room isn't too cold this winter

  4. It's absolutely gorgeous, no wonder hubby is a bit jealous! Reaction sounds like something my son would and has said, they don't mean to be unfeeling, just get a bit wrapped up in their own stuff, aren't they lucky to have loving mothers like us! x

  5. Aw, so sorry to hear that you didn't get a stronger reaction from your "baby." :( It is still beautiful, and I know that it will get use from someone in your family.

  6. Wow! That is a beautiful piece of work- I love the little specks of blue I see in there. Guys just don't "get it" when it comes to being appreciative. That was truly a labor of love- xo Diana

  8. Wow...that's ginormous!! I've always wanted to hunker down and complete a giant blanket like this. I've also fantasized that it would be snowing outside, the whole time I'm making it. Yeah, right. One of these days! How disappointing that he didn't want to take it right away...but you know, boys act differently about these things:)

  10. I'll take it if he doesn't. It's gorgeous! I'm crazy about stripes. He'll definitely change his mind then the Winter comes. Good job! It feels great to finish craft projects.

  11. I think it's a beautiful blanket! Very masculine. I don't think that boys get as excited about these things like girls do. I made a couple baby afghans back when my kids were little but nothing since.

  12. Oh my goodness! I would totally curl up in that blanket in a minute. You did such a fabulous job. And you deserve a special award because I know that when you work on a project such as this, it gets heavy and hot after a certain length. Don't worry. Your kid will be asking for his blanket as soon as the weather turns a bit. Fantastic work and great color choices!

  13. I love that blanket. It's such a work of art and that must have taken some work. I hope your tall son appreciates it and treasures it. xx

  14. Yup, ship it my way, too, if the boy doesn't want it. But I bet he'll come around and figure out this is a gift of love from his mom.

  15. I know my son would love this blanket but he would probably say something similar to yours! I think it's better off at home. It's fabulous! What a lot of work. Maggie xx
