Nesting Instinct

Happy Mother's Day!

In honor of Mother's Day, I want to share this photo of someone with real parenting instinct.

A pair of robins have been busy building a nest atop our bat house for the last few days.  It's been fun to watch all the carrying and arranging going on.  I was especially tickled to see one of last year's hydrangea blooms, which I cut off the bushes just last weekend, has been selected as building material.  The bat house is on the front of our two-story garage, just under the eaves.  I was able to get this photo with a telephoto lens from the upstairs porch of the house.

Mother's Day hat update:  My mother seems pleased with the hat I made her.  She said it fit perfectly!

  1. I love watching birds nesting. I always hang my scraps of yarn outside on twigs and branches and they all disappear x

  9. You got a great shot here. So, how will the affect the bats? Not that I like bats one tiny bit, but...

    1. I think the bats have moved out, so the robins have it all to themselves.

  10. I'm glad Mom liked the hat! Great picture of the bird too. I remember one year a robin made a nest in our shrub that was right in front of a window. It was so fun to watch the entire thing. I was amazed at how hard she worked. Now I always feel bad when a windstorm knocks down nests because I know how hard mom worked.

  13. I always enjoy watching the birds and it's a thrill when I spot a nest to keep an eye on the progress. We have one in a shrub right next to our front door right now and every time someone goes out the door the mother bird flies off. I'm hoping she doesn't give up on the nest

  17. Ooo... bird nests are so cool. I get excited when I see one, especially if it has eggs or baby birds in them. Glad to hear your mom's hat fit her perfectly. =) I'll post mine up my mom's scarf so you can see soon. Currently working on a Boriville website. I'll be posting more of my craft stuff on there, my blog right now is just for Vietnamese food =D
