Ice Water and Open Spaces

After a couple of days of unseasonably warm weather, winter is back in northern Illinois.  We've had almost no snow this winter, but it's turned cold again.  Mother Nature doesn't want us Midwesterners to get soft, after all.  I thought I'd share a few wintry shots I made today.

I stopped by a forest preserve and was rewarded with the sight of ice floating down the river.

The barren fields certainly look cold and bleak, don't they?

I actually love to drive in the country when everything is frozen and bare.  There is nothing quite like rocketing down small country roads crusted with snow and being able to see forever across the wide open spaces.

  1. I'm hoping it stays cold for a while. I really want to take the kids ice skating!

  2. Snow's only just arrived here after a reasonably mild winter, it does look pretty while it's all fresh and untouched :)

  3. Beautiful. I need to start driving back country roads in the winter. Why do I think this is something to do only in fair weather?

  4. Gosh it looks so cold but impressive. I think the last time I saw a frozen lake.....no pond was when I was a child....we (all us kids) thought it was great fun that is until the farmer fenced it off tut!!!

    keep well

  8. Very pretty scenery. We seldom see much snow but we get ice quite often in early spring.

Cute story about your clementines....yes, Harriet loves those Cuties oranges!

  9. We share your winter weather and I can say one thing about winter, "It sure does look pretty in pictures!" In real life however, I prefer spring and summer flowers!

    Great pictures though.

BTW....Did Santa get you a new mixer?

  10. Beautiful, Lynette. We had that unreasonably warm spring-like weather this past week.. NOW though, we are having freezing rain tonight --and it's 29 degrees... Yipes!!! Winter is BACK...

    Love your pictures. Stay WARM!!!

  14. Snow and ice change the landscape so much and allow us to see it from a different perspective. I love watching the ice drift but nowadays it is so cold in Norway that the rivers are totally frozen!

  18. Looks pretty cold. We had a wonderfully warm weekend that tempted us with a feel of spring and daffodils poking their green shoots out of the earth, but winter is back.

  22. We don't get ice here in Sydney. It doesn't ever get that cold. I do wonder how you drive in those conditions with the roads being so icy. xx

  27. Although I really don't like the hassle of snow, the transport disruption, etc. I have to admit that your photos are beautiful. I particularly like the ice floating down the river, and would enjoy seeing that myself on a walk.

  29. Very pretty, we haven't gotten any snow in my part of Virginia yet this year, so I've had to be content with looking at others' photos.
