A Winter Coat for the Garden

Our Midwestern weather has been so goofy lately.  A couple of days ago, I noticed that my daffodils are starting to come up and the daylilies are making new growth, yet snow showers and a low around 22 degrees are predicted for tonight.  While the sun was shining this morning, I figured it was a good time to use the Halloween straw to mulch the flower beds for winter.  I replanted a few bulbs that had already heaved, cleaned up some stray leaves, and went at it with my bale of straw.  I tend to worry over things like this though.  Is it too early?  Should I wait for the ground to freeze?  What if those daffodil tips get frozen?  But then I realized, hey, it's just a couple of flower beds.  It's not life and death, right?  Well, maybe for the daffodils . . . .

  3. Brrr, do you really want to be out there doing all that work when it's freezing? Better now than later!

As we speak, we in California are being buffeted by strong winds. My unsecured PVC arbor is lying against a tree. The fallen leaves are so thick on my upper deck that I might have to rake it—a first!

  4. Great job, then you may have beautiful daffodils to enjoy early spring!

  5. I thought I was seeing things! I cut all the flowers way down like I do every fall. I've been noticing pretty greenery coming up about 6 inches and I know I cut them to the ground!

  6. What a great idea! I never thought to protect my flower/garden. But maybe that's why I keep needing to buy new ones. Haha.

The weather has been weird, hasn't it. It snowed here (east) in October....

  7. I'm from Fort Wayne, Indiana and they had thundersnow!! Man, living in Portland makes me miss things like that. Here, a slight dusting of snow merits school closures. Pansies.

  8. I wish I had the same coommon sense you seem to possess about gardening. Have a great weekend!

  9. This sounds so familiar!! Our daffs are coming up again (somebody tell them it's nearly winter, please!) - and this is exactly the time I start worrying about when to layer the garden with hay. Last year I was too early and several things got smothered (I guess) and didn't come up in the spring.

  10. That IS a goofy winter! It's december and I think I've missed the boat here in Vancouver to plant spring bulbs. Boo. I need a plan because I'm certainly not going to look at my sad little containers containing earth and nothing else come March!

  11. The weather in Sydney has been unusual too. Today it's freezing (well freezing for us is below 20C, not sure what that is for you) and we're back into our winter clothes even though it's now supposedly summer.

  12. You sound like my husband. When we lived in the midwest--Missouri--he was always 'second guessing' me on what or when I was doing something in the garden! He wasn't a gardener, at all, so I suppose he was just wondering how it all worked! Miss my garden in Missouri!
