About a month ago, I wrote about the KasCare Foundation's Knit a Square Challenge that I am participating in along with Laurie from Kitty's Fiber Journey. My output has not been phenomenal, but here is what I have knitted so far. Eight squares.
Every time I sit down to knit, within minutes Alfie wants to play. It's tough to be productive with sad dog eyes staring me down. You're just going to have to take my word that these squares are not as mis-sized as they appear in the photo. Are they all perfect eight-inch squares? Well, no. But they are closer than they look here.
The KasCare Foundation's Knit a Square Challenge is designed to provide blankets for African AIDS orphans. According to the KasCare web site, there are an estimated 14.8 million orphans in sub-Saharan Africa. Their 2012 challenge is called the Knit-a-squillion challenge. Their goal is to send 1.2 million squares to South Africa by July 10, 2012. The squares will be sewn into blankets once they are in South Africa.

Well, those adorable children sure look happy with their blankets and beanies. What a worthwhile cause.

ReplyDeleteThat photo is really beautiful :) I've also been crocheting here, not much accomplished in the last week or so though! ;) The box I designated for squares is almost full, once it is I'll ship it off to Laurie. I think I've made 10 or 12 so far... it's so easy and relaxing. :)

ReplyDeleteWell done you! On top of all the blog following too! When I used to knit and had a cat as well, it was always a task to begin with. Cat would sit on lap and every time the yarn moved (usually over her back) she'd put out a lanquid paw and pull the creation out of my hands. Once she realised, it was the floor or leave the yarn alone, guess which route she took?
ReplyDeleteDon't knit now - as I found it didn't keep my arthritic fingers going as well as the toys do and there was just too much counting involved! Keep up the good work, though. Have publicised it with the gadget on my blog at www.ColdhamCuddliescalling.blogspot.com though and I think my younger daugther has got her knitting needles out for the cause. Must check and find out!
