Warming Up a Cold Evening

Brrr! Where's that El Nino they promised us this winter? It was four degrees yesterday, so I made a spicy skillet jambalaya to warm us up. I got the recipe from the January issue of Country Living magazine, but I'm sure there are lots of others online. I used chicken andouille sausage, which lowered the fat a little, and added a bit of smoked paprika to up the smokiness of the dish.  It was flavorful, but not too hot.  A warming bowl of jambalaya and later an episode of Downton Abbey -- not bad for a cold, winter evening.

P.S. A digital stove tip: Recently the digital control on my gas stove goofed up. It would not go above 287 degrees. I called the repairman, who came out, unplugged my stove and plugged it back in. Problem solved. Only $76 to unplug the stove. I hope this tip can save someone else a service call charge.

  1. Looks like a yummy dish! Especially on a cold winter's night. I too am a DA fan and they're saying there will be "closure" for everyone this season....that would be a nice way to end it. Why do they have to end it??? I guess I'm a "routine" person and I like to have things to look forward to but even on regular t.v. it seems the good programs only last 6 weeks....there must be something about 6 weeks that I don't understand do you? Enjoy the last of the DA shows...only 4 left now. Boo Hoo!

  2. I'm not a fan of shrimp, but your hot slightly spicy meal looks delish on a cold day like today. I've learned that lesson a few times at work. I work with so many different instruments and whenever I've called for help, I'm usually told to power it down, unplug it, and see what happens when it's rebooted. Nine times out of ten it works like a charm! Sorry you had to fork out the cash!!!

  4. If only it was that easy to repair all broken appliances! Four degrees? That's so cold. Mind you, we're in the height of summer and last week we had some days that were so cold I was back into winter clothes. I do love Downton Abbey! xx

  6. OMG.. that dish looks stupendous.. and a perfect dinner before settling in for Downton Abbey. I'm so sad it's the last season. I lived in Louisiana for 5 years so I do love me some Cajun food! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  8. That dish looks really tasty. I need to find the recipe. Is it online?

The temp here in Minnesota this morning is minus nine degrees with a minus 29 windchill.

  9. That looks YUMMY --especially when it's cold outside. It is cold here too. In fact, we are having some homemade CHILI tonight for dinner. YUM.

That was an expensive 'plug in' for you... Mercy!!!! Hope your tip can help someone else. We don't have gas here.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  10. Your jambalaya looks perfect for a cold night. I made a pot of homemade soup tonight. Thanks for the stove tip - I'll definitely remember that one! I told my hubby about it, too. You'd think in cases like that, they'd only charge half the service call charge. Stay warm!

  12. Looks like a very interesting dish! I'd have liked to try a little to see if I'd like it. Reminds me a little of our fried rice. Ouch. Glad your stove is working again, but the service charge does not sound like much fun. Reminds me of when we first got a computer. None of us knew much about it, and we couldn't get it to work, so we called a repairman. He slapped the side of the computer and said something like "sometimes you need to do this to get it to work." Then he proceeded to push/click all the right buttons to show us what to do, and the computer worked perfectly. We suspected that he just slapped the computer once so we wouldn't feel so bad!

  13. Yikes. It almost seems like they could have told you to unplug it over the phone. . . but thanks for the tip. I have a digital stove and will know what to do! And thanks for stopping by, too.

  14. I must confess I have never made jambalaya. Jambalaya looks delicious. Whau, the price you payed for unplug was high! We had snow the whole day here in North Dakota. The temps are down too. Keep warm!!

  17. Hello Iowa!! I'm a fellow Midwestern chick who moved away to marry the man of my dreams, and we've ended up in PA now since 1988. Our four sons are now grown, and it's just the two of us again....but we drive back to see our family in Iowa and MN yearly. So....these lovely Iowa sunset pix were dear to my heart.
I love the look and can almost smell the food you pictured with the spicy mix above. Can you give out your recipe?? It looks delicious. We are both Scandanavians...but love spicy foods too. Yum! Thanks for your great blog...I'm a new follower, and was delighted to hear about your anniversary trip to Dubuque. Been there several times...as my Dad was a UD alum from back in the day. Our son Andy has played there a couple of times in a coffee house near a college there, not UD. Blessings on your blogging adventure....and happy wintering in Iowa.
With love from another Iowa chick.

    1. Hi there, Kathie. I couldn't reply directly to you since you are a noreply-comment commenter. So glad to have you stop by. Do you have a blog? If you don't get Country Living, you might be able to find the recipe online. If you email me, I can send you a scanned copy of the recipe. sweetposydreams@gmail.com
